What Is Modal, and Why Does It Feel Different?

Modal is a type of rayon made from the cellulose fibres of beech trees. It was developed to combine the breathability and softness of natural fibres with greater durability and moisture management than standard cotton.

The result is a fabric that:

• Feels significantly softer than cotton — often described as feeling like a second skin

• Drapes beautifully, holding its shape without becoming stiff or boxy

• Breathes exceptionally well, keeping you cool in warmer conditions and comfortable in cooler ones

• Absorbs moisture efficiently and dries quickly, without holding odour

• Resists pilling and shrinkage wash after wash, maintaining its look and feel far longer than cotton alternatives

Beech trees used in modal production are largely self-sustaining — they don't require irrigation and grow in managed forests without consuming vast quantities of land or water. The production process uses a closed-loop system that recaptures and reuses water and solvents, making modal one of the more environmentally considered fabric choices available in mainstream clothing.

We're not going to overclaim. No fabric is perfect. But we made a deliberate choice to work with materials that are thoughtful, and modal sits meaningfully ahead of conventional cotton on a number of environmental metrics.
